Summer Art Fridays: Digital Artist Ray Tapajna
Ray Tapajna’s artwork is defined both by its content — delicate, beautiful abstractions — and its context, the Internet. With his pieces, Tapajna hopes to provide viewers with a space to meditate and contemplate, aiding in the search for inner peace. That’s we chose his “Healing in Blue” piece above — we could all use a little more calm in our lives.
Describe the piece you submitted to Summer Fridays.
This is the first of many “Healing in Blue” art pieces with which I hope viewers can be inspired and let their imagination take them to a good place, where they have the feeling of being all together with time standing still.
How does the piece relate to your memories of summer?
We have a cottage, and a stream with a little red bridge crossing it. My large family has enjoyed it for about 30 years. When I came there from a long week of work, I slept on the sun porch by a large screen window and woke up to the sounds of flowing water and was able to watch the water flowing by at the same time. When they were young, my children played by the little red bridge for hours.
Describe your process.
I mix articles with topical art that I call “Art That Talks.” I have thousands of references and results on the Internet, through my site. I started converting my original art to abstract art to see what I could create. This led me to my “Living Art,” which invites viewers to settle in and stay a while in a quiet penetrating way.
How’d you end up doing art?
I majored in art in high school and worked at the largest advertising art studio in Cleveland. In college I won a Scripps-Howard Award for Sports Illustration. However, I went into computers and was a computer supplier in my own business for many years. I came back to my art when I became an advocate for workers’ dignity in 1998.
How has Tumblr helped you?
I am not sure yet but see a wonderful potential in the opportunity to display and have many enjoy my art. It is way for all to seek out their life ideal especially in these troubled times.
