The Creators of LA: Alie & Georgia

For the last 10 months, self-taught photographer Megan McIsaac has been traveling the West Coast in an RV — a 1977 Toyota “Dolphin” — and gathering portraits of friends and creative types she met along the way. Now settled in Los Angeles, with a Mamiya c330 camera, McIsaac decided to document the community that’s inspired so much of her work: Tumblr. This is the first in an occasional series of photographic profiles.

Alie & Georgia

Once I moved to Los Angeles, it was hard to look past Alie and Georgia, the sweet lady duo behind the Cooking Channel’s new web series, “Classy Ladies With Alie & Georgia.” The two women are best friends turned cocktail connoisseurs, and can always be found at the best local bars in their beautiful vintage frocks.

What’s your favorite cocktail concoction of the moment?

Alie: I personally love 1) Bad puns 2) drinking vegetables 3) blending the fuck out of things. We just made a blended drink called a “Can’t Beet a Gin-ger Fizz” and it’s earthy and spicy and herby and I love it.

Georgia: For our newest season of Classy Ladies, we made a beer cocktail that is just stupidly good. We also made an insane marshmallow vodka cocktail that has peanut butter simple syrup in it. What’s diabetes?

Alie, you used to write for the LA Times, and Georgia, you used to blog. How did that turn into a cooking show?

Alie: It all started with the jocular cocktail called a McNuggetini. What came next were almost 50 videos that have included liquid s’mores, a yam-butterscotch cocktail, a bacon Manhattan, spicy Sazeracs, and a sesame-dark chocolate dessert drink. We’re like Willy Wonka, if he had a whimsical little drinking problem.

What’s with the vintage dresses?

Georgia: We’ve both always had an obsession with all things old and unique. When we filmed the McNuggetini video (in my grandmother’s kitchen) we both just picked out our favorite dresses to wear, which happened to be vintage. Now we get a wardrobe budget with each webseries we film, so our closets are ridiculously awesome, as is our vintage barware collection.

What do you get out of posting on Tumblr?

Alie: We love Tumblr with all of our hard drives … The fact that you can establish a voice, post it to the world, and get immediate support and reposts is something that we know is invaluable. Plus: SO MANY CAT VIDEOS, y’all.

Where should we go for a drink in LA tonight?

Alie: I love Eveleigh, even though it’s nestled in the armpit of the Sunset Strip. It’s a rustic and elegant place with gorgeous decor, a top-notch cocktail menu, and staffed by one of our favorite beverage wizards, the endearingly grumpy Mr. Dave Kupchinsky, aka Ol’ Man Winter.
