The Creators of LA: Adam Lisagor
For the last 10 months, self-taught photographer Megan McIsaac has been traveling the West Coast in an RV — a 1977 Toyota “Dolphin” — and gathering portraits of friends and creative types she met along the way. Now settled in Los Angeles, with a Mamiya c330 camera, McIsaac decided to document the community that’s inspired so much of her work: Tumblr. This is part of a series of photographic profiles.
I came across Adam Lisagor and his Sandwich Video production company a few years ago, through mutual creative friends. Adam and his team make videos, mostly for neat tech products ranging from Warby Parker to Groupon and Airbnb. I met up with him in his beautiful studio in the arts district, where I photographed him working on one of his latest commercials.
What was the first thing you ever filmed?
The first thing I shot with the intent of filmmaking was a special effect in which a friend holds an apple, I pause the camera, I take the apple out of the friend’s hand, hit record again and it looks like the apple disappeared, with weird magnetic tape tracking lines because it was 1989. I learned this trick, by the way, from my favorite movie at the time, Kentucky Fried Movie, in which a lady’s bra disappears inside her shirt and her boobs get droopy. The magic of cinema.
Your Tumblr is called Lonely Sandwich. That name just makes me sad, like i want to befriend the sandwich, and it also makes me hungry. Why Lonely?
I’m asked this a lot, and I always clear up the misconception that it’s an anthropomorphic sandwich, which it’s most definitely not. A lonely sandwich is simply a sandwich that one eats by oneself. I make no assumptions as to why the sandwich is being eaten alone — could be sadness and alienation, could be the pleasure of one’s own company (introverts know what I’m talking about) — but whatever it is, the image of a person eating a sandwich alone has always stirred a lot of emotion in me very quickly.
What’s your favorite thing about having a Tumblr blog?
There’s something common to most of the Tumblr users I know, and that’s an urge for self-expression without most of the preciousness associated with self-publishing. I created a Tumblr account because I’d had some long-winded thoughts about the first iPhone and I wanted to pretend I was a tech blogger. But it quickly became clear that Tumblr allowed so much more, that it was so extensible for creative work in any direction.
