The Next Artspace Artist: Round 3
Round 3 of the Next Artspace Artist closed with three creators at the top working in very different mediums: collage, illustration, and photography. Each offers their own unique perspectives in these short Q&As with the Artspace team. Reminder to artists: Today is the last day to enter this contest! Submit here to be considered for the fourth and final round.
Bryan Olson
Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, art for Bryan Olson has always been a family affair. Due to time spent watching his grandmothers paint, he was inspired to start creating himself and started illustration at a young age. He gets his inspiration from science, space, and Japanese illustration.
What do you hope other people get out of your art?
Wonder and captivation.
What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever made?
A scratch paper image of a skateboarder that I made in high school.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist?
That’s impossible.
What is indispensable in your studio?
My utility knife, scissors, and glue.
Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)?
Kazumasa Nagai, an amazing artist and designer.
What is your favorite place to see art?
Strangely enough, the internet. I’ve seen so much artwork that is just incredible beyond belief.
Jisoon Park
Currently working as a graphic designer for a mobile phone company in Korea, Jisoon Park turned to more artistic endeavors for a creative outlet that he couldn’t get out of his design career. He is motivated by the straw desire to just “draw something” and is frequently influenced by music, which is a driving force in his life.
Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?
I grew up in Seoul, South Korea, and live there now.
What do you hope other people get out of your art?
I hope people enjoy my artworks as they want to. I don’t mind if you find any philosophical meaning from the pieces. I don’t mind if you imagine bubble gum from the pieces. It depends on how you enjoy my artworks.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist?
Pop columnist. I love music and write about that.
What is indispensable in your studio?
Background music while I’m working.
If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose?
Julian Opie.
Agustin Farias
Born just outside of Buenos Aires, Agustin Farias knew as a kid that he wanted to study art. After moving into Buenos Aires proper to study, he found a city filled with inspiration, images, sounds, and art and began to pursue his passion.
Where do you look for inspiration? How do you get your creative juices flowing?
The internet is a big place to find inspiration. I’m about to finish the Image and Sound design career, so movies are a big source of inspiration for me. Finally life itself is the most important source of creativity: traveling around the world, doing long walks with my camera, and being always prepared to capture the situations.
What do you hope other people get out of your art?
My biggest wish is to make fell people the same sensation I was having at the moment of the shoot. Anyway I know that’s a hard thing to, so I’m glad just thinking that people are knowing my universe.
What is indispensable in your studio?
I really enjoy having different kind of cameras. I have digital, analogue, Holga, Diana, and compact cameras. I also have a lot of flashes. I love to experiment with different kind of films too.
Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)?
I think that there are a lot of great artists, and it’s difficult to choose only one. I have my favorites: Philip-Lorca Dicoria, Ryan Mcginley, Richard Avedon, David Hockney, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Gus Van Sant, Lars von Trier, Michael Haneke.
If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose?
Definitely Richard Avedon.
