The Next Artspace Artist: Final Round
The fourth and final round of the Next Artspace Artist showcases three works, each with a slightly more feminine side than past rounds. From the pink-haired beauty in Rebekah Campbell’s photograph to the direct gaze of Holly Sharpe’s illustrated portrait and the profile view of a woman in Allen Chiu’s slightly surreal image, each work represents a new perspective on the female figure. These contenders, along with the semi-finalists from past rounds, will move into the Semi-Finals starting on Monday on Artspace.com! Follow along here to keep tabs on your favorite contestants and to get details on how to vote in the final rounds.
Rebekah Campbell
Raised in a small town in Oklahoma and the youngest of four siblings, Rebekah Campbell grew up surrounded by art and with a pencil in her hand from a young age. She finds inspiration in the works of photography greats like Irving Penn and Francesca Woodman as well as the more ephemeral materials that surround her day-to-day life in her current locale of Savannah, GA.
What do you hope other people get out of your art?
I want others to feel something when they look at my photos — at times a sense of wonder, or beauty. Anything at all.
Where do you look for inspiration? How do you get your creative juices flowing?
Every place I can find. I look through old issues of fashion magazines, the internet, art books, my friends that I am always with, and lots of films. Once I get an image in my mind, I try to find inspiration in things surrounding it … inspiration can be found anywhere if you look hard enough.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist?
I’d love to have my own traveling TV show. That’s a stretch though.
Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)?
I have so many. Irving Penn, Yelena Yemchuk, Corinne Day, Francesca Woodman, David Armstrong, Ryan McGinley, Laura Letinsky, Nan Goldin, Tim Barber, Deborah Turbeville, Paolo Roversi, Cass Bird, Monet, Van Gogh, and Max Kurzweil.
What is your favorite place to see art?
I love galleries, small ones and huge ones. Art in classrooms is where a lot of it begins, though.
If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose?
Tim Walker. He is divine with portraiture.
Allen Chiu
Though initially interested in drawing and creating imagery using a graphing calculator (as a pastime during a horrible math class), Allen Chiu eventually switched over to photography in order to impress a girl. Now he looks at the oddities of society and uses his wry sense of humor to make fun of the world.
What do you hope other people get out of your art?
Ideally, they would find humor layered in it. If not, hopefully at least they see the beauty of light.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist?
I originally wanted to be a hot dog stand owner when I was a little kid, so perhaps that?
What is indispensable in your studio?
Spray fixative. I just like smelling it.
Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)?
Doyald Young who sadly passed away last year. My favorite artists that I know personally would probably be Paul Soady, Nicole Wu, and Shane Hughes. It’s really hard to pick just a few though because there are so many people that inspire me.
What is your favorite place to see art?
I love to see art where I don’t expect it. Unexpectedly finding something beautiful is a great feeling.
If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose?
I’d go back in time and get Velázquez to do a badass painting of me.
Holly Sharpe
Currently a nomad (she grew up in Scotland, last lived in London, but is now traveling around the US and Canada without a permanent address), Holly Sharpe always dreamed of becoming an artist. Encouraged by family and friends, influenced by music, new places, people, and different cultures, she hopes her art and lifestyle can serve as an inspiration for others to follow their own dreams.
What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever made?
Honestly, this changes all the time, I get slightly obsessed with some work and go back and forth between loving it and hating it. Usually my most recent work will be my favorite. So right now I am still in love with my latest painting/illustration, Lost.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist?
I love meeting new people and will never tire of it. So if I wasn’t an artist, I would love to be working with people and helping them in some way.
Where do you look for inspiration? How do you get your creative juices flowing?
I look everywhere for inspiration. Music helps a lot, other artists of course, and reading about new places, people, and cultures. Once this has sparked an idea, I guess I tend to look inwards to get the creative juices flowing. I usually visualise ideas in my head and let myself get lost in them.
Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)?
Another tough question, but if I had to pick one, I think I would have to say Egon Schiele.
What is your favorite place to see art?
Any big art gallery. I love the open, bright, and calm spaces that they are.
If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose?
Emmmmm, Conrad Roset!
